Question by Love-of-Dogs: Which dog should we get? First dog!!?
It’s my 15th birthday soon, and I’ve asked my parents for a puppy. They agreed! – I’ve never owned a dog before only because my parents said I never showed interest in having one (I’ve always like dogs though) and with them both working there would be no time for the puppy and it wouldn’t be fair. My mom is coming out of work, I have a 5 year old sister too. With my dads salary alone we can still enjoy our current lifestyle + support a dog. (My dad, mom and me sat down and talked about expenses like food, vet bills, insurance ect)
For the past 2 years I’ve asked for a dog and I guess they were seeing if it was one a ‘phase’ I was going through. My litter sister loves dogs and always wants to pet every dog she sees! (I’ve also looked at diseases, breeders ect)
Since asking I’ve been researching a few breeds I like and could *possibly* look after properly. If anyone could give more information about the breeds, pro’s, con’s ect that would be helpful.
We are looking for a medium – large dog breeds
A little bit about my families life-style:
- We are very active, I am in a running club so I could run with the dog when they are old enough)
- We all go for hikes in the hills every weekend, we are normally gone for the majority of the day, walking and eating the picnic we take.
- My parents have grown up with large dog breeds, so they know how to train and care for such dogs.
- Since my mom will be leaving work, she can, and said she will, look after the puppy during the day.
- We go on holidays abroad 1-3 times a year, we would like to take the dog with us also.
We were looking at food brands and have decided between either TOTW or Orijen, which is better or which would you recommend?
Finally, sorry its so long!!
The different dog breeds we’ve looked at at:
Labrador Retriever – But I guess they are a bit over-bred now?
Doberman – My mom’s parents had one of these dogs
American Pitbull Terrier – My dad grew up with these dogs, he always had multiple dogs at the same time
Jack Russell Terrier
Would these breeds of dogs be able to keep up with our lifestyle? Also if I started running with them? I remember reading about a pet passport? (Is that right?) for taking dogs out their country? How would be get one if we took our dogs abroad?
Please give me YOUR opinion and experiences you have had with these dogs, not what you have heard on the media or web.
Sorry it’s long, but thanks for any help and also further information on getting my first dog!
I know that JRT + Bull Terriers are smaller breeds, but they also interest me as a breed.
My family are allowing me to chose the breed as long as the said dog fits into our lifestyle. If I chose a dog which doesn’t then my parents are going to help me choose a more appropriate dog breed.
My parents are actually letting ME chose the breed.
The puppy will be going to obedience school and will also go to an agility club near where I live.
